On March 7, 1951, Faith City Ministries was started by Dick and Bee Hogan in a small rented building at 322 E. 4th Street in Amarillo, TX. From this small beginning, the Mission has grown into Faith City, Inc., which now includes not only Chapel services, but Faith City Family Lighthouse, Women’s Ministries, Children’s Ministries, emergency food boxes, clothing outreach, and the Hope Programs for Men and Women.
The most significant characteristic of Faith City, Inc. is reflected in its name - Faith City. The venture was begun by faith and has been operated by faith ever since. As with all projects, it began with a vision. God put an intense desire in Bee Hogan's heart to establish a mission on the skid row of Amarillo. She began to spend much time in prayer and Bible reading. From time to time she would go to her pastor with a plea to establish a mission. Her suggestions were met with approval and encouragement, but nothing seemed to materialize. Finally, in desperation, Bee told God, "I am ready to do what You have told me to do, to establish a mission for the down-and-out. I will begin whenever You tell me to." The moment she said "yes" to God, He gave her the green light. She was to begin that very day! God miraculously provided the building, the first month's rent of $75, and began providing the necessary equipment and supplies to have services for the transients. In the meantime, God had shown her that the mission was not only to be opened by faith, but also to be operated by faith. The mission would not depend on any one church to sponsor the work financially or provide all the workers. It was to be supported by faith in God, and He would touch the hearts of the people to give. And so it has been since that time. Faith City, Inc. is not now, nor has it ever been, funded by the United Way or by any government agency or by any one church. It is supported solely by concerned individuals, businesses, organizations, and churches, as God lays the need of helping hurting people in people's minds and hearts.
Each of the three moves to larger quarters, in 1954, 1960 and again in 1979, were God-planned and supernaturally provided for as people became concerned, prayed and gave. The Hogan's also began rescue mission work in Lubbock (1956) and in Wichita Falls (1958). These missions have since been put in other capable hands.
Bible studies have been a vital part of the Mission since its beginning. The most recent addition has been the Family Lighthouse, which opened its doors March 19, 1984. The beginning was small - two people with a burden, a dream and an obedient, active faith in the magnificent, never-disappointing God. To Him we give all the glory and praise for the growth of Faith City. And to the people who have given, supported, encouraged, and served here at Faith City, we give a much-earned and deserved "THANK YOU!"
